Explorations
design and Technique
I often follow the tried and true design process of beginning with a concept, researching, sketching and developing that initial idea, then moving on to the making process. However, I also often utilize scrap pieces lying around on my bench and put them together as a puzzle to create new pieces. I mostly keep scraps instead of melting them since I am a hoarder at heart and have a fascination with jigsaw puzzles; I see every small odd-shaped piece as a potential component of a new piece of jewellery. Another process, which is quite liberating is to begin with a block of wax and discover the final design in the process of hand carving. More often than not, the end result is pleasantly surprising!
The following pieces are made using some of my favorite traditional goldsmithing techniques to create different textures and patterns, such as roller embossing patterns on metal, oxidation, cuttlefish casting, etching, and less often yet equally satisfying filigree and reticulation. CAD design and 3D printing often come to my rescue whenever traditional techniques reach their limits. Contact me if any of these pieces catch your eye, most are one-of-a-kind and can’t be identically re-made, but I can do my best!
